Two performers twist and contort around blindingly white interiors, almost entirely consumed by their surroundings. Perry creates this effect using Photoshop tools that attempt to automatically “fill in” or erase parts of an image using artificial intelligence. The outcome is a pair of immersive spaces where the Black subject is both strikingly present and nearly imperceptible, fading or or going underground. “The preoccupations of my work are around technologies of representation, technologies of lenses, surveillance,” Perry has said, “how Blackness or Black culture show up in those spaces, how they navigate, how they explode representation altogether.”
Sondra Perry (she/her) is an interdisciplinary artist who creates videos and performances that explore digital production tools, critically examining emerging technologies of representation and reimagining their potential. Her digital work combines sculpture, moving images, AI-generated elements, and found furniture, crafting an experience that is at once familiar and distant.
