After...After...Access, Jordan Lord, 2018, 16:00

Through apartment buildings and hospital corridors, cameras follow the artist as they prepare for open heart surgery while voiceover reflects on showing, telling, and access. Open captions and audio description are integral to After…After…(Access)—its form and the questions the film poses about documentary. In some moments, the audio description, voiced by the artist, names what is occluded by the framing or focus, or expresses uncertainty about what is being shown onscreen. Even as After…After…(Access) points to the limits of representation, its layering of captions, audio description and camera footage taken by friends, family and the artist suggests the potential of our gathered partialities to make work that is both aware of its limits and prismatic.
